CÁDIAR TOWN COUNCIL

The municipality of Cádiar is located in a valley on the banks of the Guadalfeo river in the eastern Alpujarra of Granada, south of the Sierra Nevada massif. It is shaped like an inverted L and has an area of 47 km2 where the predominance of a flat topography stands out. It borders the municipalities of Alpujarra de La Sierra, Bérchules, Ugíjar, Murtas, Albondón and Lobras. The municipality is made up of the villages of Cádiar, Narila, Yátor and the urban settlement of Rambla del Banco. The municipality is bathed by the Guadalfeo river (Cádiar river) and the Yátor river. We also find in the municipality the ravines of Pedro Conde, del Lugar and Albayar.
Formerly the municipality was constituted only by Cádiar, until in 1972 Narila and Yátor joined. It is one of the most populated municipalities of the Alpujarra of Granada (1,582 inhabitants registered in 2023 according to the Institute of Statistics of the Junta de Andalucia). Cádiar is the most populated village, followed by Narila and Yátor. Inhabitants are also found in the Rambla del Banco and in scattered areas, especially in farmhouses. Cádiar is the epicenter of the municipality located at a distance of 100 kilometers from Granada capital. At one kilometer from Cádiar we find Narila and at 5 kilometers from Yátor. They are lowland villages, located in valleys on the banks of rivers and ravines. Cádiar has an altitude of 919 meters above sea level, Narila 980 meters above sea level and Yátor 747 meters above sea level, being the village with the lowest altitude in the municipality. The centers of the three villages are located around their respective churches, which in turn are located in a square. In the oldest neighborhoods of these villages we can observe the typical constructive typologies of La Alpujarra, although new neighborhoods have emerged that do not follow any traditional typological scheme.
